- In a mixing bowl, combine buttermilk or milk with lemon juice, letting it sit for 5 minutes.
- Peel sweet onions and trim the tops and bottoms.
- Make vertical cuts in the onions to create petal-like shapes.
- In a separate bowl, mix flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
- Dip each blooming onion into the buttermilk, ensuring it is evenly coated.
- Dredge the onion in the flour mixture, covering all surfaces thoroughly.
- Set your air fryer to 380°F (190°C) and let it preheat for about 5 minutes.
- Place the coated onions in the air fryer basket and lightly spray with cooking spray or oil.
- Cook the onions in the air fryer for 10-12 minutes, shaking halfway through.
- While the onions are cooking, mix together the ingredients for the dipping sauce.
