Ingredients
  

For the Batter
  • 1 lb Beef Sirloin or Flank Steak chicken or pork can be alternatives
  • 1/2 cup Cornstarch use gluten-free cornstarch if needed
  • 1/2 cup All-Purpose Flour substitute with gluten-free flour if needed
  • 1 large Egg or use a flax egg for vegan version
  • 1/2 cup Water or sparkling water for better crispiness
  • 1 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt using sea salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper using freshly cracked pepper
For Frying
  • 2 cups Vegetable Oil or peanut oil for nutty flavor
For the Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce or tamari for gluten-free option
  • 2 Tbsp Rice Vinegar
  • 1/4 cup Hoisin Sauce or soy sauce mixed with honey as substitute
  • 2 Tbsp Chili Sauce adjust to desired heat level
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar
  • 2 cloves Minced Garlic fresh
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Ginger fresh
  • 1 medium Onion chopped
  • 1 medium Bell Pepper any color, sliced
  • 1/2 cup Red Chilies optional, adjust to taste
  • 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil for drizzling
  • 2 Tbsp Chopped Green Onions for garnish

Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Slice the beef sirloin or flank steak thinly against the grain, about ¼ inch thick.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together cornstarch, flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Add in the egg and gradually pour in the water, mixing until smooth.
  4. Heat enough vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat until it reaches around 350°F (175°C).
  5. Dip each beef slice into the batter, then fry in batches for about 3-4 minutes until golden and crispy.
  6. In the same pan, add sesame oil and sauté garlic, ginger, onion, and bell pepper for 3-4 minutes.
  7. Stir in soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, chili sauce, and sugar; simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Add the crispy beef strips to the sauce and toss to coat thoroughly; stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes.
  9. Garnish with sliced chilies and chopped green onions, and serve immediately.
