Ingredients

For the Mixture
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter Can use salted butter but adjusts salt quantity.
  • 4 cups regular marshmallows Fresh marshmallows are crucial; stale marshmallows won’t melt properly.
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal Can use gluten-free Rice Krispies for dietary needs.
  • 1 pinch salt Always add salt after melting marshmallows.
  • 2-3 drops red food coloring Gel-based colors recommended for better vibrancy.
For Detailing
  • extra red food coloring Ideal for adding vein patterns.
  • 1 toothpick or skewer Perfect for creating detailed designs.

Equipment

  • medium saucepan
  • heatproof bowl
  • Large mixing bowl
  • butter knife
  • toothpick or skewer

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Prepare Bain-Marie: Fill a medium saucepan with ½ cup of water and bring to a gentle boil over medium heat. Place a heatproof bowl on top, ensuring it doesn’t touch the water, creating a double boiler effect.
  2. Melt Ingredients: Add 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter and 4 cups of regular marshmallows to the bowl. Whisk continuously for about 2–4 minutes until the mixture is smooth and glossy.
  3. Add Color and Flavoring: Once melted, carefully remove the bowl from heat and whisk in a pinch of salt along with 2-3 drops of red food coloring.
  4. Combine with Cereal: In a large mixing bowl, pour the gooey marshmallow mixture over 6 cups of Rice Krispies cereal and quickly stir until coated.
  5. Shape Brains: Oil your hands lightly and take portions to shape into oval brain forms. Use a butter knife to create grooves.
  6. Detailing: Dip a toothpick into more red food coloring and draw vein patterns on the surface of each brain.
