Ingredients

For the Cookie Dough
  • 1 ¼ cups brown butter adds richness and depth; expect to use about 1 cup after browning
  • ½ cup granulated sugar can substitute with coconut sugar for lower glycemic index
  • ½ cup brown sugar adds moisture and hint of molasses flavor; light is preferable
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract elevates flavor; can swap with almond extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour ensure it’s measured correctly for best results
  • ¾ teaspoon salt balance sweetness; adjust if using unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda acts as leavening agent
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips main flavor component; substitute with dark or milk chocolate
For Optional Add-Ins
  • ½ cup chopped nuts for extra crunchy texture; walnuts or pecans work beautifully
  • caramel sauce drizzle on top for a decadent finish
  • white chocolate or butterscotch chips substitute for chocolate chips for a different flavor

Equipment

  • medium saucepan
  • Large mixing bowl
  • electric mixer
  • whisk
  • spatula
  • Baking Sheet
  • Parchment paper

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a medium saucepan over medium-high heat, melt 1 ¼ cups of butter, stirring constantly until it transforms into a deep, honey color, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Once browned, remove from heat and allow the butter to cool to room temperature until solidified.
  3. While the butter cools, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, add the cooled brown butter along with ½ cup of granulated sugar and ½ cup of brown sugar. Beat mixture on medium speed for about 1 minute until creamy.
  5. Add 2 large eggs and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, continue beating for 2-3 minutes until light, fluffy, and pale.
  6. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and ¾ teaspoon of salt. Gradually incorporate dry mixture into wet ingredients until just combined.
  7. Gently fold in 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips until evenly distributed in the dough.
  8. Take about ¼ cup of dough and form it into balls, placing them on baking sheets about 2 inches apart.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, watching for golden edges while the centers remain soft.
  10. Once baked, remove from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheets for about 2-3 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
